Special Session on Social Signal Processing for Personalisation in Smart Cities

Aim and scope

Recent smart city initiatives by many governmental organisations, notably by India, European Union, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and China, require researchers in academia and industries from diverse fields to work collaboratively to realise the full potential of such initiatives. While digital technologies and ICT infrastructure are the backbone of smart cities concept, a smart society also requires its citizens to be espoused to a participative culture fostering creativity and innovation via the cross pollination of ideas resulting in improved quality of life. In order to achieve the vision of smart cities, personalisation will play a very important role that could empower future citizens with the necessary information and knowledge on how best to utilise the investments that governments plan to make in traditional and modern information communication infrastructure. In order to tailor, customise and offer choice and control for future smartizens, appropriate socio-technical systems, sensors and social signal interpretation framework are required to be researched and developed. 

Multimodal signal processing including computer vision, speech & image analysis, text mining, and machine-learning are the emerging forces in social signal interpretation framework and an active interdisciplinary research area. Technological advancement in these domains is capable of providing solutions for the needs of individuals, enterprises, non-profits, and the government agencies. Additionally web-based services such as Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr etc. have been part of a larger eco system to reach billions of users through information sharing. While these approaches require active participation of the individuals, behavioural and interactional analysis in public space can provide crucial input to public services within smart city infrastructure. For example, a) automatic analysis of crowd (e.g. using computer vision techniques) is important to crowd management service ensuring public safety, to provide guidelines in public space design and useful priors to surveillance activities; b) analysing interactions of individuals with other groups can provide useful cues about their social behaviour which can be achieved by audio-visual signal processing that includes research on detection, classification, recognition of individuals, groups and their actions, activities and events in socially relevant context; or c) security and surveillance in public space using person tracking, anomaly detection etc. 

Call for Papers

Interpreting, modelling social signal and use of technology in the context of smart city initiative is anticipated to be a rewarding and challenging area of research. The larger context would require (a) Technological advancement, (b) Communities and organisational advancement and (c) Human factors advancement. Special session will provide an interactive platform to address various aspects of the research challenges set in above mentioned categories (not limited to) and their contribution towards the theme of special session. The program will consist of invited talks, panels, discussion and peer-reviewed paper submissions. Accepted and presented papers will be published in the conference proceedings and submitted to IEEE Xplore as well as other Abstracting and Indexing (A&I) databases.

All submissions will be peer-reviewed by experts in the field based on originality, significance and clarity. Authors must follow the instructions outlined in http://icacci-conference.org/web/call-for-papers. The accepted and presented papers will be published in the conference proceedings. All submission must be made through the conference website http://edas.info/newPaper.php?c=19577. We intend to publish a special issue in a reputed international journal for selected papers.
